The Doodle Revolution is sparking change in the perception for doodling being a valid and effective tool in thinking and communication. Brown talks about the lack of education around visual language communication, leaving out a large segment of learners who are visually dominant. I enjoyed the Doodle University section, where Brown explores the foundations of visual language and teaches you patterns of doodling that you can use for infodoodling which is more commonly used for note-taking and explaining things. Although the book had many graphics and the occasional space to doodle, I still felt it was too word heavy, so you may want to re-consider if you are the right audience, as it's more geared towards changing a non-doodler's mindset rather than focus on improving doodling ability.

Motivations to Read

I wanted to explore more visual forms of note-taking.

3 Reasons to Read

  1. Learn more about visual note-taking.
  2. Foundations of doodling.
  3. Allow for more serendipity to come up from writing.

Notable Quotes

"That human beings have been doodling in the sand, in the snow and on cave walls for over 30,000 years; That we are neurologically wired with an overwhelmingly visual sensory ability."

"to make spontaneous marks in order to support thinking; to use simple visual language to engage three learning modalities; to use simple visual language to activate the mind's eye and support creativity, problem-solving and innovation."

"Despite what our culture suggests, doodling and sketching are powerful tools and they are for everyone, not just artsy types. It's time we recognize visual literacy as a fundamental requirement for the future."
